Growing Cabbage

Slow and steady, cabbage rewards patience with a head that keeps for weeks in the fridge.
How to Grow Cabbage
Planting
Start indoors and transplant once seedlings have a few true leaves. Like broccoli, cabbage is a cool-weather crop that struggles once summer heat sets in.
Watering & feeding
Even, consistent moisture, splitting is common when a dry spell is followed by a heavy watering or rain.
Harvest
Squeeze the head, it should feel firm and dense all the way through. Cut at the base and leave the outer leaves and root in place; you’ll often get a second, smaller flush of little heads.
Grows Well With
Plant cabbage near dill, onions, or aromatic herbs, they help confuse the pests that go straight for brassicas. See all our companion planting pairs →
When to Plant
Start indoors early January for spring, transplant by mid-March. For a fall head, start seed in June and transplant in late July. See the full planting calendar →
