A small farm, run the honest way
Ferrand Farms is a small, family owned farm in upstate South Carolina, run by the Ferrand family since the early 2020s. We raise chickens and ducks, keep a busy compost operation of red wiggler worms, and grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers from our own beds: the same seeds we sell to you.
Everything here is small batch by choice. We’d rather keep our flock healthy and our garden manageable than grow faster than we can do right by it.
How it started
It started the way most good things on a farm do: small, and a little bit by accident. We picked up a handful of hens for our own eggs, figuring a few birds in the backyard couldn’t be that different from keeping a garden. It was, and it wasn’t. Within a season the flock had grown, the compost bin had turned into a proper worm operation, and the vegetable beds had spread further than we ever planned.
What kept it going wasn’t some big five year plan. It was the small stuff: a carton of eggs that actually tasted like something, a garden that fed the family through the summer, neighbors asking if there was extra to sell. Ferrand Farms grew because people kept asking for more of what we were already doing for ourselves.
We’re still doing it that way. Every animal on this farm and every seed in the Seed Center earns its place because we’d keep it around even if nobody ever bought a single thing from us.
A day on the farm
Mornings start early, and they start at the coop. Before coffee, before anything else, its doors open and the flock spills out into the run, loud about it the way chickens always are. Eggs get gathered into the same basket that shows up in half our photos, feed and water get topped off, and somebody does a quick head count out of habit more than worry.
The worm bins come next: a check on moisture, a scoop of WormFuel or table scraps, and a look at how the castings are coming along. Then it’s out to the garden beds, weeding, watering, and harvesting whatever’s ready that week, the same vegetables and herbs we grow from the seeds in our Seed Center.
Afternoons are for orders: packing eggs, prepping chicks and ducklings for pickup, boxing up worms and WormFuel. Evenings end the way mornings started, back at the coop, making sure every door is shut tight against the foxes and hawks that would love a free meal.
