Growing Broccoli

One good head per plant, but a rush of side shoots keep coming for weeks after.
How to Grow Broccoli
Planting
Start seeds indoors in late winter for a spring crop, or direct sow in late summer for fall. Broccoli hates our summer heat and will bolt straight to flower if it matures in warm weather.
Watering & feeding
Deep, consistent watering, especially as the head is forming. Feed once at transplanting and again a few weeks in.
Harvest
Cut the central head while it’s still tight and dark green, before the little buds start to yellow or separate. Leave the plant in the ground afterward, smaller side shoots will keep producing for another month or more.
Grows Well With
Plant broccoli near dill and chamomile, both attract beneficial insects that help keep cabbage worms in check. See all our companion planting pairs →
When to Plant
Start indoors mid-January for a spring crop, transplant by mid-March. For fall, direct sow or transplant in late July to August. See the full planting calendar →
